Cantarella is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by You Higuri. The story is set during the Italian Renaissance and revolves around the life of Cesare Borgia, an Italian aristocrat and politician. Cesare's father, Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, sells Cesare's soul to the Devil in exchange for becoming Pope Alexander VI. As a result, Cesare is shunned by his father and becomes obsessed with conquest. He is aided in his political machinations by the assassin Don Michelotto. The manga was serialized in Akita Shoten's Princess Gold magazine from 2000 to 2010 and was later licensed for an English-language release in North America. Cantarella has gained recognition and was listed as one of the Great Graphic Novels for Teens by the Young Adult Library Services Association in 2007.
