Buddha is a manga drawn by Osamu Tezuka and is his interpretation of the life of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The series is known for its visually explicit yet humorous portrayal of Buddha's life. It has become a staple text in Buddhist temples and has over 20 million copies in circulation. The manga won Eisner Awards in 2004 and 2005. An anime film adaptation was released in 2011, followed by a second film in 2014. The story revolves around Siddhartha, a young prince who embarks on a spiritual journey to bring about a spiritual rebirth of the people in a desperate age of drought, famine, and constant warfare. The film adaptation won the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in 2012.
